LCD TV Panel Makers Target 40% LED Penetration by Q4’10
The continuing transition to LED backlights is motivating LCD TV panel manufacturers to develop their supply chains in order to reduce the cost of LED-backlit panels. According to the latest Quarterly LED Backlight Panel Shipment and Forecast Report, 9.5 million, or 18.5%, of the LCD TV panels that shipped in Q2’10 had LED backlights, which was 110% growth Q/Q. Q2’10 TV Shipments Show Continued Growth, But Some Regions Weakening
Overall TV shipments continued to show resilience, bouncing back from dismal 2009 levels, but there were some indications of trouble in key markets. DisplaySearch: Q1’10 Shipments Show Global TV Market Continues to Recover
TV shipments continued to show a strong rebound in growth rates from the very weak levels of early 2009 as improving global economic conditions led to greater demand for TVs. DisplaySearch: Even With High LED Premiums, 2009 LCD TV ASPs Fell Twice as Fast as 2008
According to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly TV Cost and Price Forecast Model & Report, 2009 LCD TV average selling prices fell twice as fast as they did in 2008, mainly due to a reduction in panel prices that resulted from massive over-supply in Q4′08 and Q1′09. DisplaySearch: April Large-Area TFT LCD Shipments Down 6% M/M; Revenues Down 4% M/M
April 2010 shipments of large-area TFT LCD panels were 53.9 million units, down 6% from March, and revenues were 7.1 billion, down 4% M/M, according to the DisplaySearch Monthly TFT LCD Shipment Database.
